BJCP Judge Training Session Registration

Please put your name on the list if you want to know the difference between describing (a list of my favourites):

  • A flavour as a colour instead of something relevant
  • A mouthfeel as a noise
  • An aroma as a vista

Join our own beer-ninja, Steve Plampton, who is offering these invaluable, money can’t buy, training sessions. Steve will be backed up by current ACB chairman, James P.

Steve is offering his years of experience as a BJCP judge to help bring ACB brewers up to BJCP standards. There will be a series of guided BJCP training sessions with notes and research topics to help you find your feet.

If you’ve ever fancied taking part in a BJCP judged competition and judging, then BJCP certification is a great tool. If not, just being able to judge beer and give solid descriptors and name common faults helps the surrounding brewers to improve.

Training for the BJCP certification is something you do need to commit yourself to for a number of months (up to 6). But the journey is one of support and camaraderie*, as you find your way through the maze of senses. You’ll learn to sense things you’ve never known how to before and most of all how to describe them.

Filling out a BJCP exam sheet is more about finding the words to describe something, such as aroma. You’ll learn to give descriptive content about the level of something, what it is, and learn to record that while thinking about the style. Is it a fault, is it beneficial to the beer, does it affect the balance. Then you can apportion a score to the field.

A list of BJCP research material is available on the BJCP website.

NOTE: This event is a placeholder only, and the actual time and central location will be arranged once attendees are known.

Costs will be shared to cover the cost of beers for tastings and off-flavour training packs.

Event registration open until June 30, 2025.
